Building Expertise for a Changing Profession

From Hanover, Pennsylvania, known as the “Snack Capital of the World” thanks to factories from major companies like Campbell’s, Snyder’s of Hanover, Utz, and Hanover Foods, Master of Accounting student Cameron Little brings a distinctive perspective to this year’s cohort.

Cameron developed an interest in accounting at a young age, inspired by both his mother and grandmother in the field, and began pursuing it seriously in high school. “My teacher made a lasting impression, showing me that accounting is much more than crunching numbers in a dark room,” he shared. “It’s a dynamic field that provides insight and drives decision-making.”

That early perspective has evolved into a deeper understanding of the profession’s expanding impact. While companies rely heavily on accurate financial information, Cameron recognizes that modern accounting increasingly involves planning, risk management, and strategic decision-making. These broader responsibilities are what excite him most about his future in the profession.

In the MAcc program, Cameron has valued being challenged to grow beyond technical expertise. He has been especially impressed with how instructors push students to elevate both their thinking and their professional standards.

“Our professors believe that we are very talented, whether we believe in that ourselves or not, and they know that we can achieve better and more professional work in our deliverables. They push us to not only be better accountants but also better leaders, writers, and critical thinkers. As challenging as it can be, this program has pushed me to raise my own standards and produce work I’m genuinely proud of,” he shared.

As the accounting field continues to evolve, Cameron emphasizes the importance of pairing strong technical knowledge with technological fluency. Proficiency with tools like Excel, data analytics software, accounting systems, and generative AI tools is becoming just as essential as understanding accounting standards. Learning to leverage these tools effectively without over-relying on them allows professionals to work more efficiently and add meaningful value in a rapidly changing profession.

Outside of academics, Cameron maintains balance through soccer, golf, and hiking the trails of the Pacific Northwest. He also enjoys graphic design, animation, and growing his vinyl collection. Music remains a constant, and one song that will forever be in his head is “Floating” by Alina Baraz and Khalid. “It’s chill, mellow vibe always helps me relax and just get lost in my thoughts,” he shared.

After graduation, Cameron plans to return to Pennsylvania to begin his professional accounting career. He hopes to join an organization with an inclusive and positive culture similar to what he has experienced at the University of Oregon. He looks forward to continuing to grow, not just as an accountant, but also as a coworker, friend, and individual.
